Which Medeco Models This Applies To
Medeco builds several cylinder families, and the rekeying approach differs for each. The newer Medeco 3 (M3) adds a sidebar element that requires a different key blank and pinning kit entirely. Check the face of your cylinder: Biaxial keys have a standard bow with “MEDECO” stamped; M3 keys carry a distinctive teardrop-shaped bow with the M3 logo; X4 cores are labeled on the control lug. - Key sticks or hangs at the 10 or 2 o’clock position. This usually means the bottom pins have worn flat spots where they contact the key, or the chamber walls have accumulated grit from Pennsylvania road salt tracked in on keys. The pin no longer rides smoothly to the shear line.
- Key turns but the bolt doesn’t retract. The tailpiece or cam has worked loose from the cylinder plug, or the connecting bar has fatigued. On Medeco deadbolts, this often traces to the set screw backing out after years of vibration from heavy doors.
- New duplicate keys won’t operate the lock. Medeco’s angled pins are cut to extremely tight tolerances. When a key wears, even a fresh copy from the original won’t match the degraded pin profile. The cylinder needs repinning to a new key code.
- Key requires jiggling or repeated attempts. Worn springs lose their consistent upward pressure, letting pins bind in the chambers. Pennsylvania’s humidity swings accelerate spring fatigue, especially in exterior doors without storm protection.
- Lock was rekeyed before, and now it’s failing again. Previous rekeying may have used standard pins in a Medeco cylinder, or the locksmith skipped replacing the master wafers. Medeco’s sidebar mechanism depends on precise pin-to-sidebar contact; shortcuts here always surface later.

There’s a honest middle ground here. If you’re handy, you can remove the cylinder yourself: two screws on the interior thumbturn, pull the cylinder, and note the series marking. That saves us ten minutes and you nothing, since we quote flat. Where DIY goes wrong is inside the plug. Medeco’s angled pins must seat at precise rotational positions; the sidebar drops into a slot that aligns only when every pin is correct. Drop a sidebar spring (they’re under light tension and love to launch across the kitchen), and you’re buying a new cylinder. Worse, a mis-pinned Medeco will still accept the key halfway, giving false confidence while the sidebar sits proud of the housing.
