• Key sticks or requires jiggling to turn. Worn pins no longer align cleanly at the shear line, especially in older Sargent cylinders where the bottom pins have developed flat spots from repeated contact with the key blade. The brass dust you sometimes see on your key is material worn off those pins.
• Key turns but the bolt does not retract. The tailpiece connecting the cylinder to the latch mechanism has slipped or cracked, or the cam inside a mortise cylinder has worn past its engagement point. This is common in 8-line mortise locks after twenty-plus years of service.
• Different keys operate the same lock. Pins have worn so unevenly that multiple key bittings now lift them to the shear line. In Pennsylvania rental properties, we see this most often on Sargent knobs that have been rekeyed three or four times with mixed pin brands.
