Abloy Lock Rekeying: The Pennsylvania Owner’s Guide

Abloy lock rekeying in Pennsylvania typically runs $180-$340 for a complete cylinder rekey with new keys, and we stock Abloy-compatible pin kits and cylinders on every truck for same-day service. Most homeowners notice the problem when a key they’ve used for years starts catching, or when they need to reset access after a move, tenant change, or lost key. In older Pennsylvania homes around Pittsburgh and Harrisburg, we see a lot of Abloy cylinders that have never been serviced since installation - sometimes twenty or thirty years - and the tolerances have simply drifted.

We’ve been rekeying Abloy hardware since the Protec and Protec2 lines first showed up in commercial buildings around Pennsylvania in the early 2000s. Dale Corrigan, our owner, learned cylinder theory at Triangle Tech Pittsburgh and has handled more Abloy disc-detainer cylinders than he can count over the past three decades. If you’re staring at an Abloy keyway and wondering whether it can be rekeyed or needs full replacement, the short answer is: almost always rekeyable, but the disc mechanism requires different tooling than standard pin-tumbler locks. That’s where the flat price before the truck rolls comes in - we quote the real number on the phone, not a teaser rate that triples at the door.

Which Abloy Models This Applies To

Abloy uses a disc-detainer system rather than pins, which means rekeying requires specialized disc swapping tools and factory-matched key blanks. We service the full residential and light commercial range: the classic Abloy Classic, the Abloy Protec (the blue key head), and the current Abloy Protec2 (the black key head with the rotating disc mechanism). The Protec2 cannot be keyed to match older Protec or Classic systems - that’s a compatibility gotcha we run into when Pennsylvania homeowners buy a new Protec2 deadbolt and expect it to match their existing Protec front door cylinder.

To identify your series, check the key head color and shape, or look for a small stamped code on the cylinder face. Protec2 cylinders also have a distinctive rotating element visible when the key is inserted. We stock OEM Abloy disc kits and key blanks, plus quality aftermarket equivalents from reputable manufacturers that meet the same tolerances. For most Pennsylvania residential applications, OEM is our recommendation - the disc spacing is precise, and aftermarket discs can wear faster in our freeze-thaw climate where doors expand and contract.

We also stock cylinders for Abloy padlocks (the PL300 and PL400 series) and cabinet locks, though those are less common in home settings. If you’re not sure what you’ve got, text us a photo of the key and the lock face. We’ll tell you before we drive.

Signs Your Abloy Lock Rekeying Is Failing

  • Key sticks or requires jiggling. In Abloy’s disc system, this usually means one or more discs has worn off-center or debris has worked into the mechanism. Pennsylvania’s road salt and grit get tracked in on keys all winter, and that abrasive mix accelerates wear inside the cylinder.
  • Key turns but the bolt doesn’t throw. The tailpiece connecting the cylinder to the locking mechanism has slipped or the cam is worn. On Abloy mortise cylinders, we’ve seen this after decades of use in Pittsburgh’s older brick homes where the door frames have settled.
  • New keys work, old keys still work too. This means the rekey was incomplete or incorrect - the discs weren’t fully swapped, or the wrong depth combination was used. We get called after cut-rate jobs where someone treated an Abloy like a standard pin lock.
  • Key won’t insert fully. A disc has jammed sideways, often from forcing a key when the lock was frozen. In Pennsylvania, this happens in unheated garages and mudrooms during January cold snaps. Never force it - the disc can score the cylinder wall.
  • Lost keys and no spare. Not a mechanical failure, but the most common reason we rekey Abloy hardware. The good news: we can repin or redisc the cylinder to a new key combination without replacing the entire lock, which saves the cost of matching finishes and reinstalling hardware.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s what you can safely check yourself: confirm the key isn’t bent or damaged, try a light graphite lubricant (never oil-based, which gums up disc systems), and verify the problem is the cylinder rather than a sticking deadbolt or latch. What you should not attempt: disassembling an Abloy cylinder. The disc stack is under spring pressure, the discs are tiny and directional, and without the proper follower tools and a clean work surface, you’ll end up with discs scattered across your kitchen table and no way to reassemble them to the correct key combination.

We’ve rescued a lot of “I watched a video” attempts. The tools alone cost more than our service call, and one scratched disc ruins the cylinder. If you’re in Pennsylvania and need it working today, call (844) 643-4161. We’ll quote the exact price before we head your way.
